Musa basjoo is a cold hardy banana native to China and Japan. Eventual height 4-5m. May produce fruit after several years, which are inedible. A suckering banana producing multiple offsets from around the base of the plant each year, forming a large clump.

Care requirements: Grow in full sun or partial shade. Its large, delicate, paddle shaped leaves are prone to being shredded by strong winds, so plant in a sheltered location. Keep soil well-watered during the growing season, and regularly feed with a high nitrogen feed. Depending on location or particularly cold winters, you may wish to protect stems to retain their height.

Root hardy, with stems hardy to around -5c

 

Ensete ventricosum Maurelii or Red Abyssinian or Ethopian black banana. A vigorous grower, producing huge paddle-shaped leaves, edged and backed with a deep red / purple colour, which can reach 2-3m in length.

Care requirements: Can be grown in full sun or partial shade. Plant out once risk of frost has passed. Keep soil moist during the growing season and feed regularly with a high nitrogen feed.
